DEUKHURI, Dang – A validation workshop organized by FORWARD Nepal on September 27, 2024 in Rapti Valley, Dang, brought together 39 stakeholders from Lumbini Province to discuss youth involvement in agribusiness and assess findings from three formative research studies under the YUVA Project. The event, held at the Pauwa Hotel, Bhaluwang, was participated by representatives from the Provincial Ministry of Agriculture, Land Management, and Cooperatives (MoALMC), Provincial Planning Commission, Agriculture Directorate, Cooperative Directorate, Palika officials, Agribusiness owners, Agricultural Officers, and youth researcher farmers including the project team. The South Asia Regional Hub Manager Mr Krishna Sapkota welcomed the participants and quickly shared the background of Feed the Future Innovation lab for Horticulture, its locally led and globally supported approach and awarded projects for Bangladesh and Nepal including a very brief about YUVA project managed by FORWARD Nepal. Principal Investigator for the YUVA Project, Mr. Rishikesh Dhakal, presented preliminary research findings on (a) aspirations mapping, income needs, and livelihood assets; (b) land leasing, and market study for fruits and vegetables. Senior Agriculture Extension Officer Mr. Arjun Khanal, MoALMC shared insights on youth agribusiness policies and challenges, underscoring opportunities in Lumbini province.
The workshop featured an open-floor discussion where stakeholders appreciated for sharing the research findings, provided feedback, emphasizing a focus on consumer demand to improve agricultural profitability. Local representatives highlighted the issues like land fragmentation, stray cattle, and complex local budget regulations that hinder both the start as well as sustaining of agribusinesses. Chief Guest Dr. Namrata Singh, Secretary, MoALMC Lumbini province, emphasized the need for collaboration between ministries and local governments for effective implementation of agribusiness projects and attracting youths in horti-preneurship, while Executive Director of FORWARD Nepal, Mr. Netra Pratap Sen called for equipping young farmers with skills alongside financial support. The enabling environment including the conducive policies and guidelines for youths were felt required for prospering the agribusiness by youths. The event concluded with a commitment from all parties to enhance policies that support sustainable agribusiness in Lumbini Province.
